Synastry house overlays
A house overlay shows where one person's planet lands in the other person's natal houses. It answers a spatial question: which field of life does this person tend to activate for me? The answer depends on the receiving chart, so the same Venus placement can fall in one person's fourth house and another person's tenth.
Overlays can add specificity to synastry, but they are also among the first techniques to become unreliable when a birth time is missing. Begin with data quality, then read the planet, house, closeness to a cusp, and repeated relationship themes together.
PLANETS / SIGNS / HOUSES
01
How an overlay is calculated
Calculate both natal charts with their correct date, local time, time zone, daylight-saving history, and coordinates. Keep person A's house wheel fixed, then place person B's planetary longitudes around it. Repeat in the other direction. The two overlay maps are not symmetrical because each person has a different house structure.
A planet near a house cusp may change houses under a different house system or with a small change in birth time. Record the house system and inspect the degree distance from the cusp before writing a definitive interpretation. Angular contacts to the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and Imum Coeli often deserve attention before a loose house placement.
02
The planet describes what arrives
The planet belongs to the visiting person. The Sun brings visibility and direction; the Moon brings habit, need, and emotional familiarity; Mercury brings conversation and interpretation; Venus brings attraction and value; Mars brings initiative and friction. Jupiter can enlarge or encourage, while Saturn can structure, delay, burden, or stabilize.
Outer planets move slowly, so people born in the same period may place similar Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto degrees in the receiving chart. These overlays become more personal when they closely contact an angle, personal planet, or house ruler. Do not treat a generational placement as intimate merely because it occupies a dramatic house.
03
The house describes where it is felt
First-house overlays emphasize identity, presence, and immediate recognition. Fourth-house overlays can touch home, privacy, family memory, and emotional roots. Fifth-house overlays can enliven play, creativity, romance, and visibility. Sixth-house overlays often bring routines, service, health habits, and the practical distribution of effort into view.
Seventh-house overlays foreground partnership and projection; eighth-house overlays can intensify trust, dependency, shared resources, sexuality, and vulnerability; twelfth-house overlays can bring private, unconscious, spiritual, avoidant, or hard-to-name material into the relationship. None of these houses alone proves marriage, obsession, betrayal, or a psychic bond.
04
Read overlays in both directions
If A's Moon falls in B's fourth house, B may experience A's emotional habits as deeply familiar or close to private memory. A may not experience the bond in the same way. To understand the exchange, check where B's planets fall for A and how the Moon is configured in both natal charts.
This directional difference helps explain why one person feels a relationship in a highly personal house while the other experiences it through work, friendship, or public life. It does not tell you whose experience is more correct. It tells you that the relationship may carry different meanings and expectations for each person.
05
Combine houses with aspects and rulers
An overlay says where activation occurs; an aspect says how two functions relate. Venus in a partner's seventh house may sound immediately harmonious, but a tight Venus-Saturn square changes the tone and the work involved. Mars in the eighth may feel compelling, but the natal condition of Mars and the receiving eighth-house ruler shape how that intensity is handled.
Look for repetition. A partnership theme becomes stronger when seventh-house overlays coincide with contacts to the Descendant ruler or personal planets. A home theme becomes stronger when fourth-house overlays repeat Moon or IC contacts. Repetition builds an interpretation; one placement should remain a hypothesis.
06
Birth-time limits and ethical limits
Without a reliable time for the receiving person, there is no reliable house wheel. Do not infer house overlays from a noon chart. If the time is approximate, test how far the cusps move across the uncertainty window and report only placements that remain stable. The honest alternative is a planet-to-planet synastry reading without houses.
House overlays describe symbolic activation, not consent or private intent. An eighth- or twelfth-house contact does not justify surveillance, persistence after a boundary, or claims that another person is secretly attached. Compare the symbolism with communication, safety, and behavior in ordinary life.
QUESTIONS
Questions about this subject
Do synastry house overlays work without a birth time?
Not reliably for the person whose houses are being used. Houses and angles require a birth time and location.
Which person feels a house overlay more?
The house person often recognizes the activated life area, while the planet person brings the planetary function. Both experiences should be checked.
Is a seventh-house overlay proof of marriage?
No. It can emphasize partnership themes, but commitment depends on the full charts, behavior, circumstances, and mutual choice.
